Reading Challenges

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading program to promote early literacy. At the Library, we believe in and value the core foundation of early literacy skills. The goal of this program is to encourage parents & guardians to read at least 1000 books aloud with their children before they enter kindergarten.

Details:

  • This is a FREE, ongoing reading challenge
  • Age requirement: Any child not already in kindergarten.
  • Sign up whenever you're ready by visiting the Children's Reference Desk.
  • We will provide you with a reading log to keep track!
  • We will have rewards each time your child(ren) reach a milestone on their reading log.
  • You can repeat books!
By reading about 2.5 books per day, you can finish the challenge in a two-year time period.
We hope you and your child(ren) will participate!

Year-Long Adult Reading Challenge

We want you to read some awesome books in 2020 (maybe some even outside your comfort zone). Our Read the World Reading Challenge is designed to get you to read outside your comfort zone, explore new genres, and also gives you a chance to earn some free books!

Here's how it works:

  1. Visit the Adult Reference Desk to sign up and pick up your reading log (Please don't lose the card! It'll be best to put your name and phone number on it just in case). Or download a printable PDF here.
  2. YOU will hang on to the reading log all year, filling it out as you read books. We are asking you to read 20 different books corresponding to a different country or genre.
  3. Check in at the Reference Desk each time you finish 4 books.
  4. Every time you read 4 books, you'll get to pick a free book (up to 5 books) AND receive a ticket to be entered into a prize drawing that will take place at the beginning of 2021.
  5. You have until December 31, 2020 to turn in your reading log.
Don't know what to read for a particular category? Check out our suggestion lists for each book type!

See us at the Adult Reference Desk if you have any questions! We hope you'll join us on this reading adventure.
